Will This Shade Suit Me?

A Beginner’s Beauty Shopping Checklist

Found a shade you love, but you’re not sure it will work for you? These friendly questions help you decide with a little more confidence. No beauty expertise or new products needed.

Will This Shade Suit Me? is a friendly, beginner-friendly checklist to help you pause, ask a few useful questions, and decide what feels right for you.

You don’t need to know your colour season, buy anything, or follow a set of beauty rules. It’s here to help you pause, notice what matters to you, and choose whether to buy, try first, or wait. It won’t determine your full personal colour profile, and that’s okay!

This is for you if…

  • You’ve saved a shade online but aren’t sure how it will look in real life.

  • You’re standing in a shop and feeling unsure whether to buy, test it, or leave it for now.

  • You want to make thoughtful beauty choices without pressure or overspending.

  • You’d like a simple way to consider how a shade fits your preferences and routine.

Step One

Use the questions to help you decide. A quick check is enough when you’re short on time; come back to the full list whenever you like.

7 Questions

1. ☐ What would I use this for?

Picture when you’d reach for it. For example, a lipstick you’d enjoy wearing to work.

2. ☐ Do I already have something like this?

Take a quick look in your makeup bag. If you already have a similar shade or product, ask yourself whether this one would add something you’ll use.

3. ☐ Have I seen it in different light?

A store’s lighting and a phone screen can change how a shade looks. If you can, compare it in daylight and indoor light. If you can’t, check the exchange policy and give yourself time to decide.

4. ☐ Do I like how it looks on me?

In store, ask a staff member how to try the shade safely; it’s fine to skip a tester if you’re unsure. Online, look at real-life swatches if available and remember screens can shift colours. Most of all, notice whether you like it—there’s no one right shade.

5. ☐ Will I enjoy using it in my real routine?

Think about how it feels, the finish you like, and how much time you have to apply it. Choose what feels doable for your mornings.

7. ☐ Does the price feel right for me?

Check your budget and the shop’s return or exchange policy before paying. Opened makeup may not be returnable, so it’s worth checking first.

6. ☐ Will it work with products I already use?

Think about how it might pair with your usual lipstick, blush or base. You don’t need to replace the rest of your makeup to make this work.

Step Two

Choose what feels right, without pressure

☐ BUY: I can picture using it, I like how it looks on me, and it fits my budget.

☐ TRY FIRST: I’m interested, but I’d like to check one more thing first.

☐ PAUSE: I’m unsure, feel rushed, or already own something similar. I can come back to it later.

Quick win

Before you check out, choose buy, try first, or pause. If you’re in a hurry, use questions 1, 4 and 7. You can always come back to the other questions later. Waiting is a perfectly good decision, too.

You don’t need to replace your makeup bag or know all the beauty terminology to choose a colour you enjoy. Start with what you like, what you’ll use, and what feels comfortable for you.
